In running close to 200 ethics training workshops in the last 12 months, Managing Values has observed the same top four dynamics that characterise workplaces as noted by the Washington-based Ethics Resource Centre’s 2005 National Business Ethics Surveys:

1. There is no “one size fits all” workplace ethics training program. Different managerial levels require different ethical content because the issues and span of accountabilities differ.
2. Managerial role modeling is far more effective in raising ethical standards than formal ethics and compliance programs.  The loudest message system in any organisation is what gets modelled from the level above.
3. Behavioural consistency, maintaining commitments and making time to discuss ethical concerns are the foundations of an ethical culture.
4. The poor management of underperformance remains one of the greatest unmet ethical challenges of Australian workplaces.
